Midfielder Karim Watambala scored his 10th league goal of the season as Vipers SC secured a 2-0 away victory over Buhimba on Tuesday to remain top of the table.
In the match played in Hoima, Watambala and Maxwell Owachgiu own goal were enough as Vipers maintained their four-point lead at the summit.
The visitors made a bright start and took the lead in the 12th minute when Mukundane’s header was deflected into the net by Maxwell Owachgiu, handing Vipers an early advantage.
Vipers carried their lead into the break and returned strongly in the second half, doubling it just seven minutes after the restart.
Watambala calmly converted from the penalty spot, despite goalkeeper Amanyire diving the right way.
The goal took Watambala to double figures in the league for the first time in his Uganda Premier League career, marking his most prolific season to date. He now sits just one goal behind the league’s top scorer, Ivan Ahimbisibwe.
Despite missing key players including Taddeo Lwanga, Enock Ssebagala, Usama Arafat and Odili Chukwuma, Vipers remained composed and collected maximum points on the road.
The victory moves Vipers to 55 points, maintaining their four-point cushion at the top following KCCA FC’s 1-0 win over Entebbe UPPC.
Buhimba, meanwhile, remain in the relegation zone with 15 points and have now suffered seven consecutive defeats.
In their next fixtures, Vipers SC will host Entebbe UPPC, while Buhimba Saints United will travel to face SC Villa.
