Preview: Lugazi Out to Boost Survival Hopes

Matchday 24 of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League concludes on Wednesday with Lugazi FC hosting SC Villa as they seek maximum points to strengthen their fight against relegation.

The match will be played at Lugazi Stadium in Najjembe, with fans set to witness a double-header.

The junior teams of Lugazi and Express will face off in the early kickoff at 1pm, before the senior sides take to the pitch at 4pm.

Lugazi FC come into this fixture following a goalless draw against Calvary, while SC Villa played out a 1-1 draw with league leaders Vipers SC in their previous match. The reverse fixture between the two sides also ended in a goalless draw.

Lugazi are currently winless in their last seven matches across all competitions, while SC Villa are unbeaten in their last five.

Last season, Hassan Mubiru scored the decisive goal as SC Villa secured a 1-0 victory over Lugazi in Najjembe.

Lugazi’s last win this season came in a 1-0 victory over UPDF FC at the same venue, and they will be hoping to replicate a similar performance.

SC Villa will rely on the attacking threat of Patrick Jonah Kakande, Hassan Mubiru, Najib Yiga, and Frank Ssebufu.

Kakande, who was substituted (limping) in the previous match against Vipers, has since returned to training and is available for selection.

Goalkeeper David Lukwago has been one of the standout performers this season, and with SC Villa’s solid defence, balanced midfield, and attacking options, the visitors present a formidable challenge for the hosts.

However, SC Villa have shown vulnerability on the road, with all four of their defeats this season coming away from home.

Pre-Match Reactions

SC Villa head coach Zeljko said:

“We need points on the road to keep our title push active. We drew with them in the first leg, but this time we come with full focus on securing maximum points.”

Lugazi FC head coach Simon Peter Mugerwa said:

“We have to defend well, which is something we have been improving, and also create and utilise our chances. If the boys do that, we will definitely get a positive result against SC Villa.”

A victory for SC Villa would lift them to third place with 48 points, provided Kitara FC drop points against Calvary.

For Lugazi FC, a win would move them up to 12th position with 23 points, level with URA FC, although URA hold a superior head-to-head record.

Prediction: Lugazi FC 0-1 SC Villa
