Mbarara City defeated Express FC 2-1 in the Uganda Premier League on Tuesday to boost their survival hopes.

Clinton Kamugisha and Ian Amanya scored a goal each as the Ankole Lions secured a crucial victory at Rwamwanja Stadium, while Kenneth Kimera netted the lone goal for Express FC.

Just ten minutes into the game, Clinton Kamugisha gave the hosts the lead, finishing off Ian Amanya’s assist and underlining Mbarara City’s urgency for maximum points.

However, seven minutes later, Kenneth Kimera equalized for the visitors, converting from Herbert Asiimwe’s assist as both sides went into halftime level at 1-1.

Ten minutes into the second half, Ian Amanya restored the lead for Mbarara City, and the hosts held firm to secure their first league victory since February.

After going nine consecutive games without a win, Mbarara City returned to winning ways in their 10th match when it mattered most.

It also marked the third consecutive season that Mbarara City have beaten Express FC at home.

The Ankole Lions move to 20 points in 14th position, five points above the relegation zone, with four games remaining in the season.

Express FC, on the other hand, remain in 10th position with 30 points from 26 matches.

In their next fixture, Mbarara City will visit Lugazi FC on May 6, while Express FC will travel to face Buhimba FC on May 8.

Elsewhere, NEC FC defeated BUL FC 1-0 in Njeru, courtesy of Innocent Media’s first-half winner.
