Calvary Draw Against URA Secures Topflight Survival for Lugazi and Mbarara City

Calvary FC’s 1-1 draw against URA FC in the Uganda Premier League on Tuesday evening at Nakivubo officially secured topflight survival for Lugazi FC and Mbarara City FC.

URA FC took the lead through defender Ronald Otti, who rose highest to head home from Dissan Galiwango’s corner kick.

However, in-form forward Lawrence Olaboro equalised for Calvary FC in the first half as the two sides settled for a 1-1 draw.

The result moves Calvary FC to 17 points, seven behind Lugazi FC, who also played out a goalless draw against BUL FC in Njeru earlier on Tuesday.

Mathematically, Calvary FC can no longer reach Lugazi FC’s current tally of 24 points with only two matches left to play.

However, Calvary FC can still survive relegation if they win their remaining two matches and UPDF FC lose both of theirs.

Mbarara City FC have also officially secured survival following Calvary FC’s draw against URA FC.

Calvary FC can only finish the season with a maximum of 23 points, which would match Mbarara City FC’s tally if the Ankole Lions lose their final two matches.

However, the head-to-head record is considered first, and Mbarara City FC hold the advantage over Calvary FC after winning one meeting and drawing the other this season.

Calvary FC could still be relegated on Wednesday should UPDF FC defeat KCCA FC in Bombo, a result that would also confirm Buhimba United Saints’ relegation even if they beat NEC FC.

For URA FC, the draw leaves them in 11th position with 27 points, while extending their winless run in the league to eight matches.

Later this evening, Kitara FC will visit Express FC at Nakivubo, with the Royals aiming for victory to move within four points of league leaders Vipers SC.
