The Uganda Premier League clash between UPDF FC and KCCA FC on Wednesday in Bombo could have a major impact on both the title race and the relegation battle.

If UPDF FC defeat KCCA FC, they will move to 24 points, seven ahead of Calvary FC and nine above bottom-placed Buhimba United Saints.

Should Buhimba United Saints then fail to beat NEC FC later in the evening, both Buhimba and Calvary FC will officially be relegated to the FUFA Big League.

For instance, if Buhimba United Saints draw against NEC FC and go on to win their final two matches, they would only reach 22 points, meaning they would still fail to catch Mbarara City FC, who currently sit on 23 points in the safety zone.

Calvary FC, meanwhile, can only finish the season with a maximum of 23 points, which would leave them level with Mbarara City FC if the latter lose all their remaining matches.

However, Mbarara City FC hold a superior head-to-head record against Calvary FC after winning one meeting and drawing the other this season.

Therefore, if UPDF FC beat KCCA FC and Buhimba United Saints fail to defeat NEC FC, both Buhimba and Calvary FC will officially prepare for life in the FUFA Big League next season.

A UPDF FC victory would also hand Vipers SC the Uganda Premier League title with two matches still remaining.

KCCA FC currently have 55 points, and if they lose on Wednesday before winning their final two matches, they would finish on 61 points — the same tally Vipers SC currently hold.

Even if Vipers were to lose their remaining two matches, they would still finish level with KCCA FC on 61 points.

However, Vipers SC hold the superior head-to-head advantage after beating KCCA FC 1-0 in the first round before the two sides played to a 1-1 draw in the return leg.

KCCA, meanwhile, still have a chance to keep the title race alive if they defeat UPDF and move to 58 points, just three behind Vipers SC with two matches left to play.

It should also be noted that UPDF FC have gone 10 years without defeating KCCA FC since their 2-1 away victory in April 2016.

In the last 16 meetings between the two sides, KCCA FC have won 10 matches, lost once, and drawn five times.

Can UPDF finally defeat KCCA, secure their own survival, and hand Vipers SC the league title on Wednesday? The Army side now holds the destiny of both races in their hands.
