JKL Basketball Star Jonathan Oketch Passes Away After Accident Battle

Ugandan basketball has been plunged into mourning following the death of JKL Dolphins player Jonathan Oketch, who passed away on Monday night after spending several days in intensive care following a road accident earlier this month.

According to eyewitness accounts, Oketch was pronounced dead at around 10:30 PM on Monday, June 15.

The talented basketball player was involved in a road accident on June 6 and subsequently underwent a successful surgical operation at C-Care Hospital in Mukono.

Over the weekend, reports emerged claiming that Oketch had been pronounced dead by doctors.

However, on Sunday, June 14, JKL Dolphins dismissed the reports and confirmed that the player was still alive and fighting for his life.

In a statement issued by the club, JKL Dolphins said:

“UPDATE!!!

Great news coming in is that our brother Jonathan, who was earlier declared deceased by doctors, is still alive and fighting for his life. Let us all pray for Jonathan to make it through and be with us again.”

Unfortunately, despite the efforts of medical personnel, Oketch succumbed to his injuries on Monday night after spending several days on oxygen support in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

His passing adds to a series of tragic losses that have recently shaken Uganda’s sporting fraternity.

Over the weekend, former rugby player Adnan Kawuma also passed away, leaving the rugby community in mourning.

Earlier this month, Rugby Cranes player Sydney Gongodyo was laid to rest in Sironko District following a mob justice attack. Uganda Police have since arrested more than 10 suspects in connection with the incident.

On June 5, former She Corporate FC midfielder Cissy Nantongo was laid to rest in Mpigi District after succumbing to cancer.

In May, Uganda also lost promising teenage basketball sensation Maxine Anyango, whose death sent shockwaves through the basketball community.
