Ronaldo Breaks Silence After Portugal’s World Cup Exit
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has reflected on his illustrious World Cup journey following his country’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Substitute Mikel Merino scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner as Spain edged Portugal 1-0 to book their place in the quarterfinals.
The defeat marked the end of Ronaldo’s World Cup career after the 41-year-old confirmed that the 2026 tournament would be his final appearance on football’s biggest stage.
“It’s been my last World Cup, yes… but now I will have time to think, stay with my family, and life continues,” Ronaldo said.
“We played a good game. The performance was good. We could have done better, but Spain are among the best teams. They will reach the final or come very close.”
“I’m sad after being eliminated like this, but I gave everything. I gave my very best.”
“I’m leaving with a clear conscience. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.”
“I will wake up tomorrow with the same attitude I had today. I did my best.”
“I won three titles with Portugal. Before me, there were zero titles. I can only be happy.”
“I won UEFA Euro 2016, and for me it holds the same value as winning the World Cup.”
“That will remain forever. Tomorrow is a new day, and we move on.”
Meanwhile, Portugal head coach Roberto Martínez confirmed after the match that he had stepped down from his position.
Despite Portugal’s exit, Ronaldo leaves the World Cup having added several remarkable achievements to his legendary career. During the 2026 tournament, he became the oldest player to score in a World Cup at 41 years and 147 days, as well as the first player to score in six different FIFA World Cup tournaments.
After six World Cup appearances, Ronaldo bows out with his head held high, having cemented his place among football’s greatest players. Although the World Cup trophy ultimately eluded him, his remarkable achievements for both club and country ensure his legacy will endure for generations.
