Lugazi Shock Entebbe UPPC in Nakivubo

Lugazi FC secured a surprising away victory over Entebbe UPPC on Wednesday, September 9, as the StarTimes Uganda Premier League continued with Matchday Three fixtures at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo War Memorial.

Flashy forward Cromwel Rwothomio scored the only goal of the game in the 80th minute, converting Lugazi FC’s first attempt on target.

Rwothomio beat goalkeeper Denis Otim after running onto a well-measured free-kick delivered by Frank Mulimi from around 25 metres from the UPPC goal.

For much of the game, the hosts were the more intimidating side, with Ibrahim Mugulusi and Riche Triomphe Kokola forcing Lugazi FC goalkeeper Tony Kyamera into two first-half saves.

Lugazi FC, meanwhile, failed to register an attempt on target during a goalless first half.

UPPC continued to hold the upper hand after the break, with Ronald Kayondo producing a well-executed strike in the 65th minute. However, Kyamera was alert to the danger, tipping the effort onto the crossbar to keep Lugazi FC in the game.

Aside from their attempts on target, UPPC were more threatening in the visitors’ penalty area, with Kokola, Mugulusi and substitute Julius Poloto helping the team to push forward.

Ambrose Kigozi also tried to make his presence felt in the box but was closely monitored by Livingston Mulondo and Richard Ayiko.

After keeping the situation under control, Lugazi FC gradually grew into the game, with Juma Ssajjabbi and Rwothomio improving their displays following the introduction of Brian Ade as a second-half substitute.

Despite struggling to create clear chances for much of the match, Lugazi FC eventually found the breakthrough through Rwothomio.

The visitors forced Otim into only two crucial saves throughout the game, both coming after the goal, with Rwothomio and Dickson Matama denied by the UPPC goalkeeper.

The victory ended Entebbe UPPC’s perfect start to the season. The newcomers had begun their campaign with a 1-0 away victory over defending champions Vipers SC at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, before defeating UPDF FC 2-1 at home.

Lugazi FC, meanwhile, bounced back to winning ways following their first defeat of the campaign.

The Kyagwenians opened their season at home in Najjembe with a 2-1 victory over newcomers Kigezi Home Boyz before suffering a 3-1 defeat away to NEC FC at Lugogo in their second match.

The victory in Nakivubo therefore gives Lugazi FC a much-needed boost as the early stages of the 2026-27 campaign continue.
