FUFA Appoint Asefa as Crested Cranes Head Coach
As earlier reported by Sports Light Uganda, the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has confirmed the appointment of Ethiopian tactician Asefa Firew Haile Gabreal as the new head coach of the Crested Cranes.
The appointment was officially confirmed on Friday, October 2, with Asefa signing a two-year contract that will keep him in charge of the national women’s team until 2029.
The Ethiopian tactician replaces Sheryl Botes, whose contract expired, bringing an end to her tenure as Crested Cranes head coach.
Asefa takes charge at a crucial time, with the Crested Cranes preparing for a double-header against Zambia in the Olympic Games qualifiers.
The Crested Cranes will host Zambia in the first leg on October 8 at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, before travelling to Zambia for the return leg five days later.
Asefa joins the Crested Cranes setup with a strong record in Ugandan women’s football.
During his two-year stint with KCCA Women FC, formerly Kampala Queens, he guided the club to both the FUFA Women Super League and FUFA Women’s Cup titles.
He has also previously coached the Ethiopia U20 National Team, among other teams.
His appointment marks a new chapter for the Crested Cranes as they continue their preparations for the Olympic qualification campaign.
