NEC vs Vipers: All you need to know ahead of Uganda Cup quarter-final clash

Vipers SC visit NEC FC on Friday afternoon in the quarter-finals of the 52nd edition of the Stanbic Uganda Cup.

The match will be played at the MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo, with both teams expected to field strong line-ups in this one-legged knockout tie.

NEC FC come into this fixture after eliminating Uganda Premier League side Lugazi FC in the previous round, while Vipers comfortably eased past Big League outfit Iganga United to reach the quarter-finals.

NEC have kept clean sheets in all their Uganda Cup matches so far, and playing at home could provide them with the confidence needed to challenge the defending champions.

In the last eight meetings between the two sides, Vipers have won twice, NEC once, while five matches have ended in draws.

Notably, at least two goals have been scored in each of the last five encounters.

Pre-match interviews

NEC head coach Badru Kaddu expressed confidence in his team’s readiness.

“Our camp is going well, and the players understand the importance of the game. If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best, and the players are in good spirits.

“Since the last time we met, we have remained unbeaten and have not conceded goals. If we maintain this, we shall get a good result,” he said.

Vipers head coach Jacky Ivan Minnaert emphasized the importance of the tie as his team targets progression.

“Every game is very important for us. We want to continue our unbeaten run, not only in the league but also in the cup. We have several objectives, and one of them is to reach the final of the Stanbic Uganda Cup.

“Tomorrow is a must-win game. What matters most is securing a place in the semi-final,” he stated.

The winner of today’s clash will become the first team to book a place in the semi-finals.
