Revealed: Why Uganda Cranes Will Miss the Upcoming International Break

Uganda Cranes will not take part in the upcoming international break, where they had been scheduled to play two friendly matches against Bahrain and Mauritania.

Initially, head coach Paul Put was expected to name his squad for what would have been the final international window before preparations intensify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup cycle. However, the change in plans means players will now remain with their respective clubs during the break.

The two friendly matches were set to be played in Turkey, but concerns arose over travel logistics and safety due to ongoing conflicts in parts of the Middle East near the region. As a result, the federation prioritized the safety of players and staff.

National Teams Manager Paul Mukatabala explained the decision, noting the importance of adequate preparation time while acknowledging the unavoidable circumstances.

“Of course every coach would love to have as much time as possible to get to know his players, work with them and build a competitive side. So, every time that opportunity is not available, it curtails preparations,” he told Daily Monitor.

He added: “There are very good reasons why we (Uganda) won’t be involved in any build-up matches this time round (FIFA Window March 2026). I don’t remember the last time we didn’t utilize a FIFA window, so the fact that we’re opting to pass on this one has very significant reasons behind it.”

The development comes at a crucial time as Uganda looks ahead to co-hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alongside Kenya and Tanzania.

Following a disappointing showing at the 2025 AFCON, where the team failed to progress beyond the group stage, expectations remain high for a strong rebuild.

The March international window is scheduled to run from 23 to 31 March 2026, during which most nations will play two matches.

Uganda’s absence means they will miss a key opportunity for match fitness and tactical development.

Uganda will also not feature in the special international window between 1 and 9 June 2026, as it is reserved exclusively for nations that qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

However, the Cranes are expected to return to action during the international window from 21 September to 6 October 2026, when teams are scheduled to play up to four matches according to FIFA’s international match calendar.

In the meantime, attention shifts to domestic football. The quarterfinal draw for the Stanbic Uganda Cup is set to take place this week, with matches expected to follow shortly after.

Defending champions Vipers SC will be joined in the last eight by KCCA FC, NEC FC, SC Villa, Express FC, Happy Boys Kagaba, URA FC, and Kitara FC, as the competition enters the last eight stage in its 52nd edition.
