NEC Provide Positive Update on Basangwa After Hospitalisation

NEC FC forward Richard Basangwa is in stable condition and responding well to treatment after being rushed to hospital following a late incident in his side’s goalless draw with Express FC on Tuesday evening.

Basangwa sustained the injury in the closing stages of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League match at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, after a dangerous challenge from Express substitute Glory Kisule.

Kisule struck the forward with an elbow, leaving him in visible distress and in need of urgent medical attention.

The referee immediately halted play, called for medical assistance, and issued a straight red card to Kisule. Basangwa was attended to on the pitch for several minutes but failed to respond adequately to treatment, prompting his evacuation to hospital.

Initial efforts to transport the player were hampered after the designated ambulance reportedly developed mechanical issues and lacked essential medical equipment, leading to the use of an alternative vehicle to rush him to Case Hospital.

According to a statement released by NEC FC, Basangwa was struck in the throat during the incident, which caused pain and difficulty in breathing and speaking. Upon arrival at the hospital, he was administered a paracetamol infusion and underwent a CT scan.

The scan results returned negative, ruling out any serious internal damage. The club confirmed that his condition has since improved significantly, with the player now able to breathe more comfortably and speak in a low but clear voice.

Basangwa was admitted for overnight observation, with an ENT specialist scheduled to review his condition. He is expected to be discharged if no further complications are identified.

The club reassured the public that the player is stable and receiving the best possible medical care, with further updates to be provided as necessary.

The match ended in a goalless draw, leaving NEC FC fifth on the table with 41 points, while Express FC remain 10th with 30 points.
