Ssebuufu Strike Lifts SC Villa to Third

Wednesday Results
Lugazi 0-1 SC Villa
Kitara 0-0 Calvary

Striker Frank Ssebuufu netted the decisive goal as SC Villa earned a narrow 1-0 victory over Lugazi to climb to third place on the Startimes Uganda Premier League table.

In the match played in Najjembe, Ssebuufu’s early strike proved enough to hand SC Villa all three points, as Kitara were held to a goalless draw by bottom side Calvary in Hoima.

Just 103 seconds into the first half, the visitors broke the deadlock through Ssebuufu, who also took his tally to nine league goals, just two behind the top scorer, Ivan Ahimbisibwe.

Defender David Owori was fouled, but the referee allowed play to continue, and Ssebuufu reacted quickly to smash the ball over goalkeeper Allan Batali Igama, who was off his line, and into the net.

At the half-hour mark, Ssebuufu was denied a second goal by Batali Igama, who produced a fine save.

Five minutes later, Aslam Ssemakula missed a golden opportunity to double the visitors’ lead, before SC Villa goalkeeper David Lukwago denied Lugazi an equaliser at the stroke of halftime.

SC Villa took a narrow 1-0 advantage into the break, with another 45 minutes needed to secure maximum points.

The second half produced few clear-cut chances, as Villa remained compact and disciplined to protect their lead and see out the game.

The victory lifts SC Villa to third place on 48 points, seven behind table leaders Vipers SC.

Lugazi, meanwhile, remain 13th on the table with 20 points, five above the relegation zone, with six matches left to play this season.

In their next fixtures, SC Villa will host Buhimba on April 25, while Lugazi will face Kitara at home on the same day.

Elsewhere, Kitara and Calvary played out a goalless draw in Hoima as matchday 24 concluded.
