FIFA U20 WWCQ: Nabukenya Strike Not Enough as Ghana Turn Tables on Uganda

Sunday, May 3
Ghana 2-1 Uganda

Ghana staged a second-half comeback to defeat Uganda 2-1 in the first leg of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Uganda took the lead in the first half through Agnes Nabukenya, but two second-half goals from Priscilla Mensah and Latifa Abesik secured victory for the hosts.

Ghana had an early opportunity to go ahead, but captain Linda Owusu was denied by the post.

In the 35th minute, Agnes Nabukenya struck a powerful effort from outside the box to beat goalkeeper Belinda Maku and give Uganda the lead.

After the break, Ghana responded strongly. Substitute Priscilla Mensah equalised with a well-taken header from Linda Owusu’s free kick.

The hosts completed the turnaround late in the game when Latifa Abesik calmly finished past goalkeeper Lillian Nakirya, following a brilliant solo run and assist from Jessica Apiah.

Mensah had two more chances to extend Ghana’s lead but failed to convert as the match ended 2-1 in favour of the hosts.

The two sides will meet again this Saturday at FUFA Stadium, Kadiba, for the return leg, with the winner on aggregate qualifying for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.
