Uganda Premier League leaders Vipers SC were denied victory after a disallowed goal in their goalless draw against Police FC on Tuesday at Kamwokya.

With an hour played, midfielder Enock Ssebagala thought he had given the visitors the lead after scoring from a rebound, but the assistant referee ruled out the goal for offside, claiming that Taddeo Lwanga had interfered with play while in an offside position.

Usama Arafat’s free-kick had initially struck the woodwork before Ssebagala tapped in the rebound, only for the celebrations to be cut short by the offside decision.

The incident came just weeks after another controversial moment involving Vipers SC in their match against KCCA FC, where Ssebagala also had a goal ruled out under similar circumstances despite video replays appearing to show a legitimate goal.

Vipers SC created several other scoring opportunities in the match, with Karim Watambala twice being denied by the Police FC goalkeeper from rebound chances.

The draw keeps Vipers SC at the top of the table with 61 points, while they also maintain their unbeaten run on the pitch this season.

However, the result means the Venoms are now winless in their last four matches across all competitions, having drawn against Police FC, URA FC, and KCCA FC in the league, as well as recording a goalless draw against Kitara FC in the first leg of the Uganda Cup semifinals.

Despite the dropped points, Vipers SC could still be crowned league champions this matchday if Kitara FC fail to beat Express FC later this evening and KCCA FC lose to UPDF FC on Wednesday.

Police FC remain seventh on the table with 45 points and could see their hopes of finishing in the top five fade further if NEC FC avoid defeat against Buhimba United Saints on Wednesday.

Vipers SC will next face Maroons FC on May 19 as they look to return to winning ways and edge closer to retaining the league title.
