Express FC defeated Kitara FC 3-2 on Tuesday evening at Nakivubo to officially end the Royals’ Uganda Premier League title hopes.
Mikdad Ssenyonga, Kenneth Kimera, and Henry Wamala scored for the Red Eagles within a 16-minute spell between the 16th and 32nd minutes to give the hosts a commanding lead.
Chrispus Asiki pulled one back for Kitara FC in the 35th minute, but Express FC still headed into halftime with a comfortable 3-1 advantage.
Jimmy Kalema scored late in the second half for Kitara FC, but it was not enough to inspire a comeback as Express FC held on to secure all three points at Nakivubo.
The defeat leaves Kitara third on the table with 54 points, seven behind league leaders Vipers with only two matches remaining, making it mathematically impossible for the Royals to win the title this season.
For Express FC, the victory moves them into ninth position with 36 points, level with BUL FC, who hold a better head-to-head record against the Red Eagles.
However, with two games left to play, Express FC still have an opportunity to finish in the top eight and qualify for next season’s FUFA Super 8 tournament.
Kitara are now winless in their last three matches across all competitions, and attention now shifts to the return leg of the Uganda Cup semifinal against Vipers SC, which remains their only realistic chance of winning silverware this season.
In their next fixture, Kitara FC will visit BUL FC on May 19, while Express FC will host Lugazi FC a day later.
Matchday 28 concludes on Wednesday with UPDF FC hosting KCCA FC, Buhimba United Saints facing NEC FC, and Mbarara City FC taking on SC Villa.
