Uganda Cranes Still Struggle to Move Forward Despite Libya Victory
The Uganda Cranes are still struggling to move forward despite picking up a 1-0 victory over Libya in their first international outing at Hoima City Stadium.
In front of a packed stadium, the Uganda national team once again looked uncomfortable in forward play, with the Cranes struggling to create clear-cut opportunities throughout the 90 minutes of open play.
Against Libya, Uganda failed to create any clear-cut chances, with the Libyan goalkeeper, Ayman Al-Tahir, largely tasked with dealing with crosses into his area.
Players such as Nathan Asiimwe, Allan Okello, Aziz Kayondo and Rogers Mato tried to drive the team forward, but their efforts remained largely ineffective until a set-piece opportunity allowed Okello to deliver for Arnold Vula, who headed home the winner.
The goal came from Uganda’s first serious attempt on target, highlighting the Cranes’ struggles in front of goal.
At the other end, the defensive task was far more demanding, with Denis Onyango making the difference with two superb saves in one-on-one situations to keep Uganda in front.
Throughout the second half, the pattern continued. Goal scorer Vula was substituted, with Kelvin Boateng introduced in the 59th minute in an attempt to add more energy to Uganda’s attack.
However, his introduction yielded little beyond the Cranes chasing Libyan defensive positions without creating significant danger.
In the end, the home side relied heavily on its defensive resilience to protect the lead, with Onyango and Rogers Torach making crucial interventions on multiple occasions through important saves and timely clearances.
Their efforts helped Uganda withstand the Libyan threat, with Mukhtar Al-Shremi, Hamdou Mohamed El-Houni and Ezzeddin Amer Faraj El-Maremi all failing to make the most of their opportunities.
The Cranes ultimately walked away with the three points, but their lack of attacking threat remains an area that will require attention as they continue their campaign.
