Uganda Cubs vs Cameroon, 7pm

———————————————————————————————

The Uganda U-17 boys’ national football team, the Uganda Cubs, will be in action against Cameroon this evening at Stade Moulay Hassan as they seek victory to secure qualification for the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

Uganda Cubs began their campaign in impressive fashion with a 3-0 victory over DR Congo in the opening match, courtesy of goals from Owen Mukisa, Nicholas Kawooya and Abdushakur Babu.

A victory against Cameroon will guarantee Uganda a place in the quarter-finals and automatically secure qualification for the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

Africa has been allocated 10 slots for the tournament. The top two teams from each of the four groups qualify directly for the World Cup, while the remaining two places will be determined through playoffs involving the third-placed teams.

In the previous edition under head coach Brian Ssenyondo, Uganda defeated The Gambia in the playoffs to qualify for the World Cup before progressing to the Round of 16.

Cameroon head into today’s encounter under pressure after suffering a 2-0 defeat to Ivory Coast in their opening group match, meaning they must avoid defeat to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Uganda will, however, be without Trevor Mubiru, who is suspended after receiving two yellow cards in the opening match against DR Congo.

Mubiru had provided a brilliant outside-the-boot assist for Owen Mukisa’s opening goal in that game.

Elsewhere in the same group, Ivory Coast will face DR Congo, and a victory for the Ivorians would also confirm their place in the quarter-finals and secure qualification for this year’s FIFA U-17 World Cup.
