Preview: UPDF Eye Victory to Secure Uganda Premier League Survival

UPDF FC host KCCA FC on Wednesday in a crucial Uganda Premier League fixture at Bombo as they seek victory to secure their topflight status.

The Bombo-based side currently sit four points above the relegation zone, and a win against KCCA FC would take them to 24 points, seven above Calvary FC with only two matches remaining.

Bottom-placed Buhimba United Saints can still mathematically reach 24 points if they win all their remaining matches, including Wednesday’s clash against NEC FC.

However, UPDF FC and Buhimba United Saints played to draws in both league meetings this season, meaning goal difference would be the deciding factor if the two sides finish level on points.

Buhimba United Saints currently have a goal difference of -42 compared to UPDF FC’s -15, making it virtually impossible for Buhimba to survive if UPDF FC defeat KCCA FC on Wednesday.

For KCCA, the match presents an opportunity to move within three points of league leaders Vipers SC with two games still left to play after Matchday 28.

A victory for the Kasasiro Boys would keep their slim title hopes alive, while defeat would officially crown Vipers SC as Uganda Premier League champions.

In the reverse fixture, KCCA FC comfortably defeated UPDF FC 4-0 at Lugogo.

The last time KCCA visited Bombo, the visitors secured a 2-1 victory, with Sadat Anaku and Usama Arafat scoring for KCCA FC, while Samson Kigozi netted for UPDF.

This fixture has also produced a total of five red cards historically, with four of them coming in matches played at UPDF FC’s home ground.

KCCA striker Ivan Ahimbisibwe will also be aiming to add to his tally of 13 league goals as he continues to lead the race for the Golden Boot.

Pre-match Interviews

Jackson Magera – KCCA FC Co-head Coach

“It won’t be an easy game facing a team that is fighting for survival and playing at home. We just need to create chances, utilise them, and defend well to win the game. We have worked more on our attacking play to get goals. Our focus is not on Vipers SC but on winning our own games and seeing what happens next.”

Alex Gitta – Head Coach, UPDF FC

“We have worked on improving our finishing as we search for goals on Wednesday, and we shall approach the game tactically against KCCA FC to try and get victory.”

Stats – All Meetings

UPDF FC – 1 Win
Draws – 5
KCCA FC – 10 Wins

Prediction: UPDF FC 1-1 KCCA FC
