Vipers, KCCA Beaten: Five Talking Points from the Opening UPL Fixtures

The 2026/27 Uganda Premier League season got underway last Friday, with the opening round producing several notable results and early talking points.

The opening game of the season saw defending champions Vipers SC suffer a shock defeat to Entebbe UPPC, a result that caught many Ugandan football fans by surprise.

As the first round of fixtures concluded, we take a look at five major talking points from the opening weekend.

1. Entebbe UPPC Shock Vipers SC at Kitende

Coming into the new season as defending champions, Vipers SC had become accustomed to making bright starts to their league campaigns. However, things went the opposite way on Friday.

An own goal from defender Kevin Dasylva Bady was enough to hand a resilient Entebbe UPPC side a memorable 1-0 victory at Kitende.

Despite featuring some of their new signings, including Farouk Miya, Joel Serunjogi and goalkeeper Loyce Mbaba, the Venoms failed to find the spark needed to get all three points.

Vipers will now regroup and shift their focus to their upcoming continental engagements while also looking to bounce back in the league.

2. KCCA FC Stunned by NEC

Just as it happened at Kitende, KCCA FC suffered a disappointing defeat at home, losing 2-0 to NEC FC at MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo, on Saturday.

Coming into the new campaign as FUFA Super 8 champions, KCCA failed to live up to expectations as NEC outplayed them in front of their home supporters.

The result was particularly significant for NEC, who were seeking quick revenge after losing the FUFA Super 8 final to KCCA just weeks earlier.

A swift response will now be required from Brian Ssenyondo’s men if they are to avoid an early-season slump.

3. SC Villa and Kitara Share the Spoils

SC Villa and Kitara FC played out a 1-1 draw at Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku, in Villa’s first league game at the venue this season.

Andrew Olumu put Villa ahead before Chrispus Asiki struck late to earn Kitara a share of the spoils.

Villa, who appear to be in a rebuilding phase, will now turn their attention to their upcoming league fixtures, while Kitara will shift focus to their CAF Confederation Cup engagements early next month.

4. NEC Send Early Title Message

NEC FC made an impressive start to the season with a convincing 2-0 victory over rivals KCCA FC at Lugogo on Saturday evening.

Goals from Richard Nasanga and substitute Pius Obuya were enough to silence KCCA in their own backyard.

The result sent an early message that NEC intend to compete strongly for the league title this season.

The club has strengthened its squad with the additions of players such as Henrique Lubwama, Fahad Bayo and Mustafa Mujuzi, and their performance against KCCA demonstrated the quality within the squad.

NEC will now hope to maintain that level of performance throughout the campaign.

5. New-Look Express FC Beaten by BUL

In Jinja, a new-look Express FC suffered a 1-0 defeat to BUL FC on Sunday evening.

Express are under the guidance of new head coach Morley Byekwaso, who handed debuts to more than 10 players in the opening fixture.

Among those making their first appearances for the club were left-back Shafik Batambuze, Rogers Atube, Isaac Wagoina, Andy Kyambadde and goalkeeper Mathias Kigoonya.

Express will continue to host their home matches at Nakivubo Stadium, as they did last season, and will be hoping for a quick response when they return to action.
