Uganda Rugby Star Sydney Gongodyo Dies

The Uganda Rugby Union has confirmed the death of Uganda Rugby Cranes and Pirates Rugby Club player Sydney Gongodyo.

Reports indicate that Gongodyo may have died as a result of mob justice, although the exact cause of death has not yet been officially confirmed.

Gongodyo had been named on the Pirates Rugby Club roster for their playoff match against Heathens scheduled for Saturday, June 6.

The tragic news comes on a sombre day for Uganda’s sporting fraternity. Earlier on Friday, June 5, members of the football community gathered in Mpigi District to bid farewell to Cissy Nantongo, who passed away on Wednesday evening after a battle with cancer.

Just weeks ago, Ugandan basketball player Maxine Anyango also passed away.

More details to follow.
