Kakira Simbas Receive Irish Society of Uganda Support to Boost Rugby Academy

Eight primary schools and two secondary schools are set to benefit from rugby development programmes following financial support extended to newly promoted Kakira Rugby Club by the Irish Society of Uganda.

The club confirmed receipt of the support on Thursday, September 24, 2026, with the funding primarily aimed at strengthening the Kakira Rugby Academy programme, according to a document released by the club and seen by The Sports Light.

The club’s wider Rugby Academy programme includes a weekend programme, school-based rugby engagements across eight partner primary schools and two secondary schools, as well as activities conducted through three newly established rugby camps within Kakira.

Through the support from the Irish Society of Uganda, the club says it will strengthen its efforts to provide children with regular opportunities to learn, play and develop through rugby in a safe, positive and inclusive environment.

Beyond developing rugby players, the programmes are also designed to promote discipline, teamwork, confidence, leadership, respect and the positive use of time among young people.

The development comes at an important time for Kakira Rugby Club, popularly known as the Kakira Simbas, following their historic promotion to Uganda’s senior rugby league.

The Simbas secured promotion after defeating KIU Crows 38–3, earning their maiden appearance in Uganda’s senior rugby tier.

The eastern Uganda-based side is set to host its home matches at Ruck Yard when the Uganda Rugby Premiership gets underway.
