Mbarara City Target First Win Over Maroons in Seven Years to Boost Survival Hopes

Tuesday, April 21
Mbarara City vs Maroons FC, 4pm – Kamwenge

Mbarara City FC will be aiming to secure their first victory over Maroons FC in seven years as they battle to keep their Uganda Premier League survival hopes alive.

The matchday 24 encounter, set to be played at Rwamwanja Stadium, comes at a critical moment for the Ankole Lions, who are desperate to return to winning ways for the first time since February 2026.

Currently sitting 14th on the table with 16 points, just one point above the relegation zone, Mbarara City find themselves in a must-win situation.

However, both their recent form and historical record against Maroons offer little encouragement.

Mbarara City are winless in their last eight league matches, having lost seven and drawn once, a goalless stalemate against BUL FC.

Their struggles are further compounded by a poor head-to-head record, having failed to beat Maroons since 2019.

Their last victory over the Luzira-based side came courtesy of goals from Makueth Wol and Ivan Eyamu in a 2-0 win. Since then, Mbarara have lost four and drawn two of their last six meetings against Maroons.

The reverse fixture this season ended in a draw in Luzira, where Marvin Busuulwa gave Mbarara the lead before Abel Eturude struck late to earn Maroons a share of the points.

In their most recent outing, Mbarara City surrendered a lead to lose 2-1 at home to Police FC, further denting their confidence.

Maroons, on the other hand, suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to NEC FC in their previous match.

A win for Mbarara City would lift them to 19 points and potentially move them four points clear of the relegation zone, depending on results elsewhere, particularly if Buhimba United lose to table leaders Vipers SC.

For Maroons, victory would see them climb to eighth place with 32 points, provided BUL FC drop points against UPDF FC.

While Mbarara City are fighting for survival, Maroons are targeting a top-eight finish to secure qualification for next season’s FUFA Super 8 tournament, setting up a contest with high stakes for both sides.
