By: Geoffrey Mugabi
The head coach of the Uganda U-20 Women’s National Team, the Queen Cranes, Sheryl Ulanda Botes, named a 35-player provisional squad on Friday, 17 April, ahead of the crucial double-header against Ghana in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.
This is the final qualifying round, with both teams just 180 minutes away from securing a place at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
Preparations
Uganda will enter residential camp on Saturday, 18 April, at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru.
The Queen Cranes are expected to train for two weeks before facing Ghana, with the first leg scheduled to be played between 1–3 May 2026.
Ghana, on the other hand, entered residential camp earlier on 29 March 2026 and will have spent a full month in preparation by the time the first leg is played.
Head-to-head
The two sides previously met in 2022, where Ghana defeated Uganda home and away, winning 2-1 and 5-0 respectively to progress with a 7-1 aggregate score.
Ghana went on to eliminate Ethiopia 5-1 on aggregate in the final qualifying round to secure a place at the World Cup.

History
Ghana have qualified for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup seven times, while Uganda are still in search of their first-ever qualification.
Nigeria hold the record for the most appearances (11), having reached the final twice (2010 and 2014) and finished fourth in 2012, although they are yet to win the tournament.
Qualification rules
The winner on aggregate after the two legs will qualify for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
If the aggregate score is tied, the away goals rule will apply. Should the tie remain level, it will be decided by a penalty shootout, with no extra time played.
Players eligible for the competition must be born on or after 1 January 2006.
