Mukono District has intensified efforts to develop Kabaddi ahead of the sport’s demonstration at the upcoming USSSA Ball Games II National Championships scheduled to take place at Sacred Heart Secondary School in Gulu later this academic term.
As various zones across the country seek to embrace the rapidly growing sport, Mukono has made significant strides through a capacity-building initiative aimed at equipping teachers, coaches, and students with the necessary knowledge and skills.
The training session was held on Wednesday, June 14, in Nakifuma Zone A and was facilitated by Joshua Jalon of the Mukono District Kabaddi Association.
A total of 68 participants from schools across three USSSA zones, including Nakifuma and Mukono, benefited from the programme, marking an important milestone in the development and introduction of Kabaddi in the area.

Following the successful capacity-building exercise, Mukono Zone is expected to commence its qualification process, with at least four school teams projected to secure places at the inaugural USSSA National Kabaddi Schools Championship.
Kabaddi is among the disciplines that will be showcased during this year’s Ball Games II as efforts continue to expand the sport’s footprint within Uganda’s school sports structure.
Although this will be the first time the sport is featured at the USSSA National Championships, the Uganda Kabaddi Federation has previously organised competitions and development programmes in various parts of the country.
Several schools, including Kyadondo Secondary School and St Barnabas Secondary School, have already emerged as some of the sport’s growing powerhouses, highlighting the increasing popularity of Kabaddi among Uganda’s school-going athletes.
With awareness and participation steadily rising, stakeholders believe the inclusion of Kabaddi at the national championships will provide a major boost to the sport’s growth and development across the country.
