BREAKING: Véron Mosengo-Omba Steps Down as CAF Secretary General

Véron Mosengo-Omba has officially announced his resignation as Secretary General of the Confederation of African Football, bringing to an end his tenure that began in 2021.

In a press release issued from Cairo on March 29, 2026, Mosengo-Omba stated that after more than 30 years in international football administration, he had decided to step down to focus on personal projects.

“After over 30 years of an international professional career dedicated to promoting an ideal form of football that brings people together, educates, and creates opportunities for hope, I have decided to step down from my position as Secretary General of CAF to devote myself to more personal projects,” he said.

He added that he leaves office with a clear conscience, having overcome scrutiny and criticism during his tenure.

“Now that I have been able to dispel the suspicions that some people have gone to great lengths to cast on me, I can retire with peace of mind and without constraint, leaving the CAF more prosperous than ever.”

Mosengo-Omba also expressed gratitude to CAF leadership and stakeholders, particularly CAF President Patrice Motsepe.

“I sincerely thank the CAF’s President Dr. Patrice Motsepe, my teams, and all those who, directly or indirectly, have enabled CAF and organized African football to make real and remarkable progress. Let us hope that the progress made will last and be sustained.”

His resignation comes amid growing scrutiny over governance issues within CAF, particularly surrounding his tenure beyond the stipulated retirement age.

Controversy over retirement rules
At the centre of the dispute is CAF’s Regulation 130, which sets the compulsory retirement age for staff at 63, with a maximum three-year extension allowed at the discretion of the president or general secretary.

Mosengo-Omba, who was appointed in March 2021 at the age of 61, reached that threshold in October 2022. CAF president Patrice Motsepe granted him a three-year extension, which expired in October 2025.

Under CAF rules, no further extensions are permitted beyond that point, meaning his continued stay in office since then has been widely viewed by critics as a breach of internal regulations.

Despite this, Mosengo-Omba remained in position, even continuing to oversee operations during major tournaments like December’s AFCON in Morocco, a move that raised concerns about governance and accountability within African football’s governing body.
