BREAKING: FIFA slaps global bans on Mutyaba, Kalyoowa and Miiro over match-fixing scandal

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has imposed global bans on several Ugandan football figures following a match-fixing investigation linked to a Uganda Premier League fixture between Kitara FC and Express FC.

The match, played on December 21, 2024, ended in a 7-0 victory for Kitara FC and had earlier been flagged in a betting integrity report submitted by FIFA, which raised suspicions of manipulation for betting purposes.

The report indicated there had been prior knowledge that Express FC would suffer a heavy defeat, with the team expected to concede at least five goals.

In its latest decision dated March 31, 2026, FIFA confirmed that it has extended global suspensions to former Express FC coach Mike Mutyaba, goalkeeper Emmanuel Kalyoowa, and former Chief Executive Officer Ashraf Miiro Mwanje.

The trio has been banned from all football-related activities worldwide with effect from March 12, 2026.

Earlier investigations had indicated that Mutyaba allegedly coordinated the match-fixing scheme alongside Ivan Katende, who has previously been linked to similar cases in Ugandan football.

The two were also reported to have worked with Miiro in the suspected arrangement. Investigators further claimed that betting accounts connected to Katende placed wagers on the match through a Tanzania-based betting company.

FIFA also confirmed that the case involving Mbazira Ashiraf is still pending before its Disciplinary Committee.

FIFA stated that all concerned parties have been duly notified, underlining its continued commitment to safeguarding the integrity of football and combating match manipulation worldwide.
