Sydney Gongodyo Laid to Rest as Calls for Justice Continue
Uganda Rugby Cranes and Black Pirates Rugby Club star Sydney Gongodyo was laid to rest on Tuesday evening at his ancestral home in Buweri County, Sironko District, bringing an emotional farewell to a player whose tragic death has left the nation in mourning.
Gongodyo was buried at approximately 5:50 p.m. in a ceremony attended by family members, friends, teammates, sports officials, and hundreds of mourners from across the country.
The burial was marked by scenes of grief and emotion as tributes poured in for the fallen rugby star, who was remembered as a talented athlete, dedicated teammate, and role model to many young sportsmen.
In a touching final tribute, members of Black Pirates Rugby Club carried Gongodyo’s casket and escorted their teammate to his final resting place.
The rugby player died on June 5, 2026, following an alleged mob attack under circumstances that remain under investigation.
His death sparked widespread outrage across Uganda’s sporting fraternity, prompting calls for justice and renewed condemnation of mob violence.
Since the incident, police have intensified investigations and have so far arrested 10 suspects in connection with the alleged killing.
The suspects include Ssebagala Noordin, Ayebazibwe Roden, Namukose Juliet, Mondoni Elly, Twinomujuni Herbert, Katsigazi Perigrino, Tayebwa Darlious, Tugume Hannington, Mugwiisa Obed, and Owino Joseph.

According to police, efforts are ongoing to identify, trace, and apprehend other individuals believed to have participated in the attack.
Tributes have continued to pour in from rugby clubs, sports leaders, teammates, and fans across the country, many of whom have described Gongodyo as a hardworking and disciplined player whose contribution to Ugandan rugby will not be forgotten.
As the sun set over Buweri County, family, friends, teammates, and supporters bid farewell to a player whose life was cut short but whose legacy on and off the field will continue to inspire future generations.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death remain ongoing.
