Ten Suspects Now in Custody Over Death of Rugby Player Sydney Gongodyo
Uganda Police have arrested two additional suspects in connection with the death of Uganda Rugby Cranes and Black Pirates Rugby Club player Sydney Gongodyo, bringing the total number of suspects in custody to ten.
The latest suspects have been identified as Mugwiisa Obed and Owino Joseph, a security guard.
According to police, Mugwiisa was captured in video footage wearing a yellow T-shirt and carrying a large log during the incident that led to Gongodyo’s death on June 5, 2026.
Investigators revealed that during interrogation, Mugwiisa led them to a local laundry where he had taken the yellow T-shirt he was seen wearing on the day of the attack.
The garment was subsequently recovered and has been added to the evidence being examined by investigators.
The two arrests increase the number of suspects currently in custody to ten as investigations into the alleged mob killing continue.
Police have stated that efforts are ongoing to identify, trace, and apprehend other individuals believed to have participated in the incident.
Authorities reiterated their commitment to ensuring that all those responsible are held accountable and brought to justice in accordance with the law.
The death of Gongodyo has continued to attract widespread attention across Uganda’s sporting fraternity, with tributes pouring in from teammates, clubs, sports administrators, and fans.
Investigations remain ongoing, and police have indicated that further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
