UPL: Kitata, Byabacwezi Fire BUL Past SC Villa to Top of the Table
Tuesday, November 3
BUL FC 2-1 SC Villa
BUL FC have maintained their unbeaten start to the StarTimes Uganda Premier League season after handing SC Villa their first defeat of the campaign with a 2-1 victory on Tuesday.
In an encounter played at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru, Alex Kitata and Derrick Byabacwezi scored in the first half to inspire the Eastern Giants to victory, while Tonny Asiku netted a consolation goal for the visitors.
SC Villa nearly broke the deadlock in the 20th minute when Asiimwe’s well-taken free kick was brilliantly saved by BUL goalkeeper Braddy Wokorach.
Five minutes later, BUL took the lead through Alex Kitata, who finished off a cross from Swabiru Mpasa.
Interestingly, just like last season when BUL defeated SC Villa 2-1 at the same venue, Kitata was once again on target to open the scoring for the hosts.
Eleven minutes later, Derrick Byabacwezi doubled BUL’s advantage, capitalising on a long goal kick from goalkeeper Braddy Wokorach to make it 2-0.
BUL went into the half-time break with a comfortable two-goal advantage, putting themselves in a strong position to climb to the top of the league standings.
After the restart, SC Villa pushed to get back into the contest and pulled one goal back in the 69th minute through Tonny Asiku.
However, the Jogoos could not find another goal as BUL held on to secure all three points and maintain their unbeaten run.
The victory takes BUL FC to the top of the table with 23 points, level with NEC FC. However, the Eastern Giants occupy first place courtesy of their head-to-head advantage after defeating NEC FC 2-1 earlier in the campaign.
Meanwhile, SC Villa drop to third position after losing their place at the summit, with BUL and NEC FC now occupying the first and second positions respectively.
The victory also means BUL have defeated SC Villa in their home league meetings for the third consecutive season.
BUL will return to action on November 18 when they visit Vipers SC, while SC Villa will host UPDF FC two days later, on November 20.
Elsewhere, Fahad Bayo scored the only goal as NEC FC defeated UPDF FC 1-0 to collect maximum points.
Kitara FC, meanwhile, played out a 1-1 draw with Police FC on the road. Gaddafi Wahab scored an early goal for the hosts before Samuel Ssekamate equalised for Police to ensure the hosts secure a point.
