Bashir Mutanda Explains Decision to Retire from Football at 28

Former SC Villa forward Bashir Mutanda has confirmed that he will retire from competitive football at the age of 28.

Born in January 1998 in Buikwe District, Mutanda revealed exclusively to Kawowo Sports that he will play the final match of his career today, citing persistent injury problems that have significantly affected his ability to perform at his desired level.

“Unfortunately, I feel like time is up for me, though I would have loved to continue playing the beautiful game,” Mutanda told Kawowo Sports.

The striker explained that injuries have been the major factor behind his decision to retire prematurely.

“For the past five years, I have depended on painkillers to play football, and it is hurting.

“This injury has taken a toll on me, limiting my abilities and reducing the pace at which I want to play. I feel I have made the right decision for the good of my health.”

When asked about his next move, Mutanda ruled out a future in coaching or football administration.

“Not coaching, not administration,” he said. “I want to concentrate on working outside football, and I welcome any opportunities.”

Mutanda’s final competitive appearance is expected to come when Wakiso Giants take on Young Elephants in their last FUFA Big League match of the season.

The forward has scored nine goals for the Purple Sharks this campaign.

Wakiso Giants will need victory and favourable results elsewhere to avoid relegation, a scenario that would provide a fitting ending to Mutanda’s playing career.

Mutanda began his football journey with the Vipers Junior Team and won the Juniors League in 2016.

His performances earned him promotion to the senior team by coach Miguel Da Costa before he was loaned out to Busoga United.

In 2018, he played a key role in helping SC Villa avoid relegation, scoring 15 goals during the campaign.
