FIFA Unveils New Pre-Match Ceremony for 2026 World Cup
World football governing body FIFA has confirmed a new pre-match ceremony that will be introduced at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Under the new format, all players included in the matchday squads of both teams will line up around the centre circle before the national anthems are played ahead of kick-off.
The ceremony will also feature oversized national flag banners, while players from each team will enter the pitch through a dedicated arch positioned near the tunnel.
The new arrangement means that substitutes, who traditionally remain on the bench during pre-match formalities, will also be present on the field as part of the ceremony.
The changes come after FIFA experimented with a new player walkout format during the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, where players were introduced individually in an NBA-style presentation as they emerged from the tunnel. The tournament was won by English Premier League side Chelsea.
However, at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, players will not be announced individually. Instead, they are expected to be escorted onto the pitch by children before taking their positions around the centre circle.
According to FIFA, the objective of the new pre-match ceremony is to provide spectators inside the stadium with a complete 360-degree view of the occasion, creating a more immersive experience for fans.
Once the national anthems have been played, the traditional pre-match protocols will follow, including team handshakes, official team photographs, and the coin toss involving the captains of both teams.
FIFA has also revealed plans to introduce additional entertainment elements throughout the tournament, including coloured smoke displays and pyrotechnics.
“As the FIFA World Cup grows, we continue to innovate the way the game is experienced,” FIFA President Gianni Infantino said in a statement.
“Having all players and referees face each other in the centre circle during the national anthems will create a moment of unity, pride and emotion that truly belongs to the teams and to everyone.
“The FIFA World Cup is about every player and every fan, and this new pre-match ceremony reflects that.”
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will kick off on June 11 across the United States, Mexico and Canada, with 48 nations competing in the biggest edition of the tournament in history.
Argentina are the defending champions after defeating France in the final of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
