Senegal Government Slams CAF Decision, Demands Justice and Independent Probe

The Government of Senegal has strongly condemned the decision by the Confederation of African Football Appeal Board to strip the national team of its 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title and award it to Morocco.

In an official statement issued in Dakar on March 18, 2026, the government expressed “deep dismay” over what it described as an unprecedented and extremely serious decision.

Authorities argued that the ruling violates the fundamental principles of sporting ethics, including fairness, loyalty, and respect for the integrity of the game.

The statement further asserted that the decision stems from what it called a “clearly erroneous interpretation” of CAF regulations, resulting in a ruling deemed both unlawful and unjust.

According to the government, overturning a result achieved on the field after a properly completed match undermines not only the credibility of CAF but also the trust that African people place in continental sporting institutions.

Senegal also rejected what it termed an administrative attempt to erase merit and sporting excellence, insisting that such actions cannot be tolerated.

In a significant escalation, the government called for the opening of an independent international investigation into alleged corruption within CAF’s governing structures.

It added that Senegal will pursue all available legal avenues, including action before competent international courts, to ensure justice is served and that the integrity of sporting results is upheld.

The statement also referenced Senegalese citizens reportedly detained in Morocco following incidents linked to the AFCON final, noting that authorities remain fully engaged in monitoring the situation to secure a swift and favorable resolution.

Reaffirming its stance, the government pledged to remain resolute, vigilant, and unwavering in defending the rights of the national team and restoring what it described as the honour of African sport.

The statement was signed by Marie Rose Khady Fatou Faye, Secretary of State to the Prime Minister in charge of Relations with Institutions and Government Spokesperson.
