Sserunjogi Strike Sends KCCA Second, Revives Title Charge

By: Geoffrey Mugabi

Joel Sserunjogi scored the decisive goal as KCCA FC defeated Kitara FC 1-0 on Friday evening to move up to second place and boost their Uganda Premier League title ambitions.

In the match played under the floodlights at MTN-Omondi Stadium, Lugogo, Sserunjogi’s first-half strike proved enough to separate the two sides in a closely contested encounter.

The victory sees the Kasasiro Boys return to winning ways following their defeat to SC Villa in the previous outing.

KCCA now sit second on the table with 48 points, just four behind leaders Vipers SC, while Kitara drop to third with 47 points.

The first half offered limited clear-cut chances, with both teams maintaining a cautious approach.

However, the breakthrough came in the 44th minute when Kitara’s Living Kabon lost possession in midfield.

Saidi Mayanja reacted quickly, cutting the ball back into the area for a well-positioned Sserunjogi, who fired home a powerful shot to give KCCA the lead heading into halftime.

Kitara returned for the second half with renewed intent, pushing forward in search of an equaliser.

Their best opportunity came in the 76th minute when Jasper Aheebwa’s effort struck the crossbar, denying the visitors a way back into the game.

KCCA nearly doubled their advantage two minutes later, but Mayanja was denied by goalkeeper Meddie Kibirige after a swift attacking move.

Despite late pressure from Kitara, KCCA held firm to secure all three points in front of their home fans.

With their Uganda Cup campaign already over, KCCA’s focus now firmly shifts to the league as they aim to maintain momentum in the title race.

In their next fixtures, KCCA FC will travel to face Entebbe UPPC on 21 April, while Kitara FC will host bottom-placed Calvary the following day.
