AS FAR Rabat 1-1 Mamelodi Sundowns (Agg: 1-2)

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Mamelodi Sundowns, home to Uganda Cranes veteran goalkeeper Denis Onyango, have been crowned 2026 CAF Champions League winners.

The South African giants held AS FAR Rabat to a 1-1 draw at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium to secure a 2-1 aggregate victory, having won the first leg 1-0 in South Africa.

In the final, Mohamed Rabie scored for AS FAR Rabat, while Teboho Mokoena found the net for Mamelodi Sundowns.

Heading into the match, Sundowns needed to avoid defeat to clinch the title, and they displayed resilience throughout the contest. Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams proved crucial, especially in the second half when he saved a penalty to deny the hosts a potential winner.

AS FAR Rabat took the lead through Mohamed Rabie, who converted from the penalty spot following a VAR review.

However, Sundowns responded before halftime when Tashreeq Matthews set up Teboho Mokoena, whose powerful strike crashed off the crossbar and into the net to level the score at the end of the first half.

In the second half, AS FAR Rabat were awarded another penalty with 13 minutes remaining, presenting them with a golden opportunity to regain the lead.

This time, Williams denied Mohamed Rabie from the spot to keep the scores level and preserve Sundowns’ aggregate advantage.

The South African champions held on to secure a 1-1 draw on the night and claim the CAF Champions League title with a 2-1 aggregate victory.

Despite lifting Africa’s biggest club trophy, Denis Onyango was shown a red card after reportedly throwing a bottle of water toward home supporters during the celebrations.

The triumph marks Onyango’s second CAF Champions League title, having previously won the competition with Sundowns in 2016.

Coach Miguel Cardoso guided Sundowns to redemption after the club lost last season’s final to Pyramids FC.
