Gomba Break Ssese Jinx as Buddu, Busiro Prepare for Home Matches

Ssese 1-2 Gomba

Record champions Gomba ended Ssese’s nine-game unbeaten run with a 2-1 victory at Lutoboka, completing their revenge for last season’s defeat.

Reymond Kayemba scored his third goal of the tournament to give Ssese an early lead, raising hopes of another comfortable outing at home.

However, Gomba responded strongly, with defender Collins Ssemanda levelling the scores with a superb free-kick in the 35th minute.

After the teams went into the break level at 1-1, the five-time champions returned for the second half with renewed determination and took the lead just two minutes after the restart through their most consistent player, Peter Kyomuhendo.

The victory made Gomba only the second team to defeat Ssese on the Islands since the appointment of head coach Edrisa Walusimbi.

The other team to achieve the feat was Buluuli, who defeated Ssese in Walusimbi’s first game in charge in June 2025. Since then, Ssese had gone nine games unbeaten, winning seven and drawing two.

The victory has moved Gomba closer to securing a place in the Masaza Cup quarter-finals, in what would be their first return to the stage since 2023, when they reached the final before losing to Bulemeezi at Wankulukuku.

Gomba have now moved to 15 points in second place in the Masengere Group, behind leaders Kyaggwe, who have 16 points. Ssese remain on 12 points but face a difficult task, with their remaining two matches both scheduled to be played away from the Island.

Ssese will need to beat Kyaggwe and Bulemeezi in their respective home matches as they fight to secure direct qualification or a possible runners-up spot and a place in the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, Busiro and Mawokota are also chasing qualification, although their chances are limited to the best runners-up position and could depend heavily on Ssese’s results in their remaining matches.

Busiro will be in action on August 16 when they host Kyaggwe at Trinity College Nabbingo, while Mawokota will host Bulemeezi at Buwama Playground on the same day.

In another group, Buddu will host Kyadondo at Sports Arena Kitovu, with Kyadondo needing maximum points to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Elsewhere in the group, Buwekula will host Buvuma, while Busujju will welcome Buluuli.

In the Muganzirwazza Group, Ssingo will look to revive their campaign when they host Butambala at Mityana Ssaza Ground.

Bugerere will host Kabula, while Kooki will take on Mawogola in the other fixtures.
